Faculty Positions—Skidaway Institute of Oceanography

We invite applications and nominations for two faculty positions available 1 July 2009. These appointments represent the beginning of a substantial expansion in the Institute's faculty over the next three years in concert with the completion of new laboratory facilities. We are particularly interested in the following areas of expertise:

1. Sediment Dynamics and/or Benthic Boundary Layer Processes - a scientist interested in research at the interface between geology and physics in marine, coastal and estuarine environments. Our ideal colleague would have a field-based program examining the interface between sedimentology and bottom boundary layer physics in coarse-grained and/or fine-grained systems, with potential areas of interest including sediment resuspension and transport, coastal morphodynamics and fine-scale stratigraphic development.

2. Near-shore Physical Oceanography - a scientist with demonstrated interest and capabilities in examining the dynamics of water flow in estuaries and shallow coastal environments, including dynamic forcing from buoyancy, tides, winds, and bottom morphology and the role of physical processes in solute transport and fate. The use of modern field-observational techniques is desirable.

Successful candidates will develop their own field-based research programs with a technical approach involving some combination of observations, analytical theory and numerical modeling. Further, they should be interested in collaborative research efforts with faculty at the Institute and within the region. It is expected that faculty will be involved in academic and research-based education and training programs. We seek individuals whose interests complement existing strengths (see www.skio.usg.edu ) and who ideally are interested in southeastern US coastal environments such as the extensive salt marshes, estuaries and broad continental shelf of Georgia . We anticipate that the appointments will be made at the Assistant Professor level, but applications from more senior candidates may also be considered. Send CV, statement of research interests and teaching experience and contact information for at least three references to either:
