Microzooplankton ecology, feeding complexities among plankton, harmful algal blooms, gelatinous marine phytoplankton especially Phaeocystis, tri-trophic interactions, ctenophore ecology, invasive jellyfish, coastal development, cultural eutrophication, hypoxia.

  • Institutional project leader of a NSF Collaboration to Integrate Research and Education, the goal of which is to broaden minority representation in marine sciences.
  • Mentored dozens of middle- and high school students, undergraduate interns, and graduate students, including USA and foreign students. 
  • Higher Education Associate 2003-2008 for NSF PRISM (Partnership for Reform in Science and Mathematics) project in Georgia (http://www.prism.armstrong.edu/).
  • Team leader of inquiry-based summer course for K12 science teachers using barrier islands as field setting for improving content knowledge and developing class activities.
  • Conceived, designed, and organized collaborative interdisciplinary science courses and practicum experiences for pre-service teachers.
  • Serve on the GA Dept of Education standards development committee for the new high school oceanography curriculum.
  • Project leader on a state-funded STEM initiative to develop a professional learning community of high school oceanography teachers and college faculty via social networking. 
  • Work with a variety of community and NFP organizations, NGO’s, and state agencies to educate lay people, politicians, and resource managers on changes occurring in Georgia estuaries, and action items to minimize environmental degradation and loss of ecosystem services.
  • Serve on the Environmental Education Association steering committee to develop a state-wide nationally accredited (NAAEE) certification program for environmental education in GA.
  • Institutional Education Coordinator, including planning, implementation, and supervision of ocean science education and outreach activities between universities, research centers, extension service offices, NOAA and other agencies with ocean/coastal research and education missions.
