Aquaculture

| Black sea bass are an important commercial fish caught off the Atlantic coast. There numbers are decreasing and thus large scale aquaculture is likely to support the increasing demand for this fish , particularly in sushi and live fish market. At SkIO we have a pilot scale aquaculture project for black sea bass and tilapia. Approximately 15, 000 juvenile tilapia, produced each week by large brooder tilapia, serve as the food for black sea bass. As a result of constant water temperature throughout the year (geothermal cooling in the summer and solar heating in the winter) and tilapia as food we have been able to produce 2 lb black sea bass from young fry in approximately 1 year. The water from the tilapia is used to grow vegetables while black sea bass water is used to grow an edible seaweed. Thus, an organic recirculating system (no pesticides, hormones or antibiotics are used) produces black sea bass, tilapia, vegetables and seaweeds. |
