SkIO is an active participant in several large cooperative programs as well as numerous smaller individual research projects funded by federal, state, local and private sources.
The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) was created in 1997 as a collaboration among twelve federal agencies, with the intent to coordinate national oceanographic research and education. With NOPP's support, SkIO is establishing the South Atlantic Bight Synoptic Offshore Observational Network (SABSOON).
Coastal Ocean Processes (CoOP) is a program begun in 1987 that seeks to plan and implement multi-investigator, interdisciplinary research in the coastal ocean. CoOP is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Organic Biogeochemistry group at SkIO investigates the reactivity of organic matter from diverse aquatic environments, employing a formidable suite of analytical tools and methods.
Georgia Coastal Research facilities located at SkIO include the Saltmarsh Ecosystem Research Facility (SERF), the Bioremediation and Environmental Research Mesocosm (BERM); and the Race- Track Recirculating Flume.
The National Association of Marine Laboratories (NAML), organized in the late 1980's, is a nonprofit organization of over 120 members employing more than 10,000 scientists, engineers, and professionals and representing marine and Great Lakes laboratories stretching from Guam to Bermuda and Alaska to Puerto Rico. NAML member laboratories provide a variety of academic, research, and public service programs. SkIO is an active member of NAML.
