The
Skidaway Institute houses the Southeast Atlantic Center of the
Alliance for Coastal Technologies. The Center brings to ACT some
unique support facilities for the development and testing of
environmental sensors.
Supporting
efforts on sensor development and deployment include an engineering
support group as well as electronic and machine shops.
Facilities providing fast access for deploying sensors include a
network of offshore towers, the
South Atlantic Bight Offshore Observational Network (SABSOON), which
are presently instrumented with an array of meteorological and
oceanographic sensors, lined to shore by microwave transmission to
provide for real time data acquisitions.
In
addition, the Institute maintains a
Saltmarsh Environmental Research Facility (SERF),
which allows easy access
to a saltmarsh and adjacent tidal waters for deploying and
maintaining sensors in this environment.
SkIO
will participate in all activities of ACT as detailed in the ACT
home page. In addition, it will establish and organize the
Alliance membership for the southeast Atlantic coasts, including
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and the east coast of
Florida. The SkIO Center will also organize and convene
workshops on specific topics related to environmental sensors as a
part of the overall ACT initiative. Click here for information on scheduled
activities.
