Permeable Sediments Gordon Research Conference 2006

The second Gordon Research Conference on Permeable Sediments took place at Colby College in Waterville, ME, 25-30 June 2006. Tim Shaw, USC, and Carolyn Oldham, Univ. Western Australia, served as co-chairs for the conference with vice-chairs Markus Huettel, FSU, and Matt Charette, WHOI.

At the conference, elections were held for vice chairs for the next conference. Carolyn Slomp, University of Utrecht, and Joel Kostka, Florida State University, will serve as vice-chairs, while Markus Huettel and Matt Charette will chair the next conference.

The first Gordon Research Conference on Permeable Sediments took place at Bates College in Lewiston, ME, 15-20 June 2003. The first conference chair was Richard Jahnke, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography; vice-chair Ian Webster, CSIRO. The sixty-nine attendees to the first conference highlighted the diverse perspective of the field. Attendance was broadly international, with Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Brazil, Canada and the US represented. A third of attendees were graduate students. The agenda for the first conference is posted in GRC format here.

Coastal Benthic Exchange Dynamics (CBED)

The Coastal Ocean Processes Program has funded four new projects on benthic boundary layer exchange, with a significant amount of the total research effort focused on permeable sediments. The projects are:

Kilo Nalu - Benthic Boundary Layer Geochemistry and Physics at the Kilo Nalu Observatory: Eugene Pawlak (project leader), Francis Sansone, Eric DeCarlo, Margaret McManus (all University of Hawaii) and Timothy Stanton (Naval Postgraduate School)

iBED - integrated Benthic Exchange Dynamics: Further Development of the Eddy Correlation Technique: Peter Berg (project leader, University of Virginia), Markus Huettel (Florida State University), Hans Roey and Volker Meyer (MPI)

MUDBED - MUlti-Disciplinary Benthic Exchange Dynamics: Carl Friedrichs (project leader), Robert Diaz, Courtney Harris, Steven Kuehl, Jesse McNinch (all Virginia Institute of Marine Science), Lawrence Sanford (University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science) and Linda Schaffner (VIMS)

BOTTOMS UP - Benthic Observatory and Technology Testbed On the Mid Shelf - Understanding Processes: William Savidge (project leader), James Nelson, Dana Savidge, Richard Jahnke, Ann Gargett (all Skidaway Institute of Oceanography), George Voulgaris (University of South Carolina) and Tim Short (University of South Florida)

Special Session on Coastal Sand Ecosystem Dynamics at ASLO, June 2005

A special session on permeable sediments was held at the summer 2005 ASLO meeting in Spain. Organizers were Perran Cook of the Max Planck Institute and Markus Huettel of Florida State University.

Special Session on Permeable Sediments at Summer ASLO, June 2004

A special session on Permeable Sediments was held at the summer 2004 ASLO meeting in Savannah GA. For more information, read the session abstract. Invited talks were presented by Markus Huettel, Florida State University, and Martial Taillefert, Georgia Institute of Technology. A listing of all presentation titles and authors in the session is posted here.
