Information
The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is a marine and environmental
research facility and does not confer degrees. Faculty do teach a summer
course on coastal interdisciplinary marine science for advanced
undergraduate and graduate students (see SkIO main page),
as well as several courses offered via video conferencing. These courses
are listed at some Georgia universities, and students can thereby receive
credits toward their degrees. The main contemporary faculty-student
interaction is advisement. SkIO faculty have or can recieve adjunct
faculty status at other universities, and can serve as either a committee
member or the major thesis advisor. Graduate students complete their formal
classroom instruction at a degree-granting institution, e.g. Georgia Tech or the University of Georgia . Meanwhile, if
they have chosen a SkIO faculty member as their advisor, they spend
their off-semesters and summers in residence at SkIO conducting their
thesis research. When their coursework is completed, these grad
students typically move to SkIO full-time until their theses are completed.
They receive their degrees from their home institution, but the thesis is
signed by and reflects the SkIO faculty input.
Peter Verity has adjunct graduate status at the University of Georgia,
Georgia Institute of Technology, Savannah State University, and
Armstrong Atlantic State University. His lab includes graduate and
undergraduate students from all three schools. If you are interested
in pursuing a similar relationship, please contact him via e-mail. Please provide
background, status, education, career interests, and any other
relevant information. You may also wish to contact other staff members
listed on the lab's People page.
